Top 10 Things To Double-check Before You Launch Your Boat This Spring!
May is finally here, along with the expectations of sunshine warmer weather, and it's got all the boating enthusiasts and Limnophiles (Lake Lovers) at the edge of their seats! Though the temptation to just give in and launch your boat at the first 70 degree day can be difficult to tame, there are a few key things to check before enjoying the #LakeLife once again.
Here are our Top 10 Spring Launch Prep Checklist Items that our staff at the Lighthouse Harbor Marina highly recommend going over to protect your boat long term, and ensure your summer boating experience.
- First and foremost, make sure to follow the recommended service guidance for the summerization of your boat, and ask what might need to be done! Your service team is here to help!
- Make sure you clean your boat at least once per year! Though we bottom wash your boat before putting it into winter storage (to protect your fiberglass hulls and pontoons from the lake film build up), we recommend you give your vessel a detail cleaning, which is like a spa treatment for your boat. We offer detail services at our marina, with a variety of packages, depending on your boat type and dirt build up. If you are cleaning it yourself, don't forget to clean the interior of your boat; especially the storage areas under the seats! Mildew tends to grow there before you know it, and is often neglected! Make sure to clean your mooring cover (boat cover) at least once a year as well.
- Check the age of your battery! While cars are roughly 5-6 years between replacements, boats tend to have more of a draw on their batteries (between 4-5 years). Also make sure it's properly secured to your vessel.
- Inspect your bumper protection on your docks! White dock guards can dry rot and crack because of how the elements can take their toll on them. Replace them every few years. Questions about dock guards, or don't have any on your dock? Ask our service department!
- Inspect all your safety equipment on boat, including fire extinguishers, flares, personal flotation devices and first-aid kits, and repair, recharge and restock them as necessary.
- Check all lists on your boat to make sure they are in place and operating properly.
- Fill your tank with the freshest, highest-quality fuel available.
- If you will be towing your vessel to it's launch point, you will also need to properly inspect and maintain your trailer prior to your first outing!
- Make sure your boat insurance coverage is current.
- Make sure you have a U.S Boat Towing Membership activated! Our service department doesn't offer towing, but the TowBoatUS vessel is docked at our marina! For a low annual cost, you can get towing services, fuel delivery and jump-starts, as well at a low percent discount on gas at our marina! Click HERE fore more info!
